Oil spills can destroy fisheries, coat recreational beaches, harm or kill wildlife, and destroy coastal habitat. Oil spills can have a serious long-term impact on the environment including lower reproduction rates and physical mutation in the offspring of birds and mammals. Harmful oil components can contaminate fish that are in turn eaten by other fish, seabirds, and humans, thus passing these components up the food chain. In short: oil spills can result in severe environmental conse-quences and, partly as a result of that, significant economic losses. Therefore, it is essential that response capabilities are improved and maintained in state of readiness in order to reduce the adverse impact of an oil spill when it occurs. KOSEQ has the equipment to response adequately to destructive oil spills.
One of the most successful methods of controlling oil at sea is to remove it from the water surface with one of the KOSEQ oil sweeping system. The KOSEQ oil sweeping systems are versatile mechanical oil recovery systems. They are designed for dynamic use with virtually any type of propelled vessels but can also be used in stationary applications.
A KOSEQ oil sweeping system is, in essence, a fence that can be towed by any vessel at an angle alongside the ship. The new Koseq Victory Oil Sweeper can also be operated in front of a tugboat by pushing it. The top layer of oil and water is picked up by the fence and moved towards a recovery unit. The mixture collected is pumped into a storage tank or hopper in the vessel.
A KOSEQ oil sweeping system is very flexible in terms of the vessels capacity as well as its operation system. It is mobile and can be easily stored and transported.
Only a small number of people is needed to put a KOSEQ oil sweeping system into operation, after which the system can operate almost unmanned, even in relatively rough sea conditions.
A KOSEQ mechanical oil recovery system has many possible applications. It can be used on vessels equipped specifically for oil control operations or on other vessels that can be quickly converted, such as tankers, dredges, tugs, buoy tenders, barges, etc. In fact almost any seagoing vessel, which has good manoeuvrability at 1,5 to 3,5 knots and has provisions for the storage of oil on board can host one of the Koseq oil sweeping systems.
